The Pacific Rim Trailer will Blow Your Socks Off

Mark your calendar's and fullscreen the video because Guillermo Del Toro's new film "Pacific Rim" is set to blow the world apart.  Picture if the US Army updated a set of Rock Em Sock Em Robots, upscaled those beasts to about a 90 ft scale and then sent them to fight gigantic Godzilla sized killer space aliens. I'm sold.

Cult Movies at the Coolidge

October's not quite over yet, and if my high-school movie tastes taught me anything, then I'm pretty sure that tonight, October 30th, is Devil's Night. This year, Coolidge Corner theater marks the occasion with a late night showing of the Brandon Lee classic, The Crow.  Ending the career of rising star and son of martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, The Crow is a gritty example of early 90's grunge culture moving into film and redemption story with more gore and more angst than ever before. Perfect for a midweek Halloween kickstart.

The theater at Coolidge has had an incredible line-up this month, of which I have taken advantage.  This past Saturday I attended the Halloween midnight movie double feature and I wish I had stayed through the next four films of the marathon.  Luckily, the double feature was The Exorcist followed by The Thing so I could stand to miss Day of the Dead, Phantasm, Candyman and an early Cronenberg.

Next month the Coolidge is rolling out a set of cult masterpieces.  Check out what they have coming.

THIS WEEKEND Nov 2 & 3: Predator
Next Weekend Nov 9 & 10: Evil Dead 2-Dead By Dawn

Weekend after Next Nov 16 & 17: ROBOCOP!!! Part Man. Part Machine. All Cop.

I don't know how there could be a better set of midnight movies in a row.  Bam! A buddy war movie that halfway through turns into an Schwarzenegger-at-his-prime driven sci-fi action blow 'em up. Next week, Bam!  Blow-out budget semi-sequel to the campy Sam Raimi horror film with more gags, more blood and more tree rape? Next week, Bam! The best Academy Award winning and immaculate splatterfest/cyber-action flick ever made!  Let's say if you can't find me on the weekends this month a good first guess would be at the Coolidge.

September Must See's: The Master, Sleepwalk with Me, Looper

September has been a great month to watch movies. Mike Birbiglia's "Sleepwalk with Me," P.T. Anderson's "The Master" and Rian Johnson's "Looper" are some of the cream of the crop if you're thinking about taking in a flick anytime soon.

Sleepwalk With Me - Comedian Mike Birbiglia tells the story of his struggle finding his feet as a comedian while dealing with the end of a long term relationship and a rapidly developing sleepwalking disorder.   Adapted from his hilarious one man show, this limited release is tricky to find but absolutely worth it.  A charming, honest and incredibly awkward tale, I had one of the better times that I can remember laughing along with Birbiglia's refusal to see a doctor even after nightfighting the Jackal, actually a hamper, one stressful night at his folks.  "Sleepwalk with Me" is currently playing at the Coolidge Corner theater in Brookline.

The Master - This movie is an Oscar-bait cream dream.  Stunning performances from Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix drive P.T. Anderson's latest masterpiece to legendary levels.  Joaquin plays a completely unrepentant drunk who falls in with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's, an  intellectual cult leader, inner circle.  I don't know enough about Scientology to confirm whether or not this film is a dramatization of Elron Hubbard's sci-fi religion but I do know that if it is, then that's absolutely terrifying. I am a huge fan of "Boogie Nights" and I might have to make the leap and say that "The Master" is my favorite offering from Anderson, it's that good. At just over two hours I left the theater last Saturday already planning my next showtime.  Also playing at The Coolidge, try and catch this one on Anderson's special 70mm film showings at the Harvard Ave movie house.

Looper- This movie is going to be playing everywhere and should be seen by everyone. A time-travel-assassin-noir-action-thriller starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt as two version of the same person trying to kill each other. Whoa. Even if the movie wasn't directed by Rian Johnson, who helmed and wrote the vastly under-appreciated high-school noir "Brick," I would probably cactch this one just out of sheer curiosity about how it ever got past the initial pitch. As with all Rian Johnson movies expect twists, amazing dialogue and a compelling plot to keep you thinking from title screen to the credits. I'm seeing it tomorrow and I'm absolutely psyched.

Sir Mix-A-Lot goes to the movies

To cheer Jon up from the loss of his boy Shoppach things have got to get a little weird.  Enter hundreds of iconic film characters rapping bout asses. Try and sing-a-long with The Terminator, Homer Simpson, Spicoli,   and the Joker...you won't.

Lindsay Lohan Still Making Headlines

Let me preface this by challenging you to find an acceptable picture of Lindsay Lohan on Google to use on the blog... Oh, it took you less than five minutes? I doubt it.

Lohan is apparently still making movies these days, and her latest is titled "The Canyons," co-starring adult film star James Deen.  Classy.  The film was written by Bret Easton Ellis, author of "American Psycho," who likens Lohan's acting skills to Faye Dunaway and Liz Taylor.

But the better story from all of this comes during the making of one of the film's sex scenes.  Lohan, after already appearing in Playboy last year, decided she would be uncomfortable taking her clothes off for the camera unless the 10-man crew stripped down to their underwear first.  Apparently Lohan had enough pull to make the move work, and on went the scene.
