Looking to come back stronger in the 2012-2013 campaign after a dismal first-round exit from this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs run, the Boston Bruins are already making moves to bolster their team, starting with the re-signing of two forwards, and the parting of ways with a defenseman.
Daniel Paille, a winger on the Bruins fourth line, or the Merlot line as they call themselves for the merlot-colored jerseys they don during practices, inked a three-year deal. Chris Bourque, son of Bruins legend Ray, signed a two year deal after coming over from Washington for Zach Hamill.
Even with two players signed, the Bruins still have six players who could be on the free agent market come July 1. One such player will be Joe Corvo, according to Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli.
"We've got some young players coming and there may be another player that we feel could fill that spot better. It was a number of different things."
The remaining players who would need new deals to stay in the black and gold are forwards Chris Kelly, Gregory Campbell, and Brian Rolston, as well as defensemen Greg Zanon and Mike Mottau. Aside from Kelly and Campbell, Chiarelli sounds like he has plans for the other three already.
"With the three guys we acquired at the deadline, I've said, let's go into free agency and see where it goes. Really, there hasn't been any commitment or anything, but I haven't dismissed it, I guess, at this point."
Fellow Merlot liner Campbell is one of the Bruins strongest physical presences, and keeping him on the big, bad Bruins only makes sense. As for Kelly, the center chipped in a 20-goal season after being named an alternate captain.
There's less than a month until free agency opens, so we'll be keeping a close eye on the Bruins to see if they start wheelin' and dealin'.
